Reading Assignment
Lesson 11
“Take pride in your appearance”
Sonny often tells the story about a gas station at which he used to fill up the van. On the wall behind the counter, the mechanics displayed an enticing poster of that month’s pin-up girl in her swim wear. Even for a preacher, that large, full-color image was a difficult temptation to avoid.
As Sonny tells the story, he tried very hard to keep his eyes from lingering on that poster, but one time his glance caught more than he expected. In the arms of that beautiful, half-dressed woman was an item that he never thought he would ever see a woman hug. In a tender embrace, the woman held close to her body a set of socket wrenches. The poster advertised automotive tools that most women could not even name much less want to embrace, yet it was woman who was being used to sell these tools to men.
From that experience, he gained a powerful illustration of just how enticing the form of a beautiful woman can be. Marketing executives use women to sell men aftershave. Magazine advertisers use bikini-clad women to sell men trucks. It is even said that Coca Cola used the female form to design their world-famous glass bottles because they knew that men would be attracted by it.
Don’t ever grow so comfortable in the relationship with your husband that you assume he doesn’t care how you look. Every normal male wants his wife to look attractive.
If he says he does not care,
How you look or what you wear,
Be alert and be aware,
He may be looking elsewhere.
Thought Questions
1 Corinthians 9:27
“I discipline my body and bring it into subjection…”
(NKJV)
1 Corinthians 6:12
“’Everything is permissible for me’-
but I will not be mastered by anything.”
Women who want to keep their husband’s attention must dedicate themselves to also keeping their feminine figure. The average American is overweight, not because of some medical condition, but because of a lack of self-discipline. Women owe it to their husbands and to their God to keep themselves fit and under self-discipline. How much do you weigh? How much effort have you made to dominate your husband’s viewing pleasure? Define gluttony. Are you guilty of this sin?
Song of Solomon 7:1-9
“How beautiful your sandaled feet,
O prince’s daughter!
Your graceful legs are like jewels,
the work of a craftsman’s hands.
Your navel is a rounded goblet
that never lacks blended wine.
Your waist is a mound of wheat
encircled by lilies.
Your breasts are like two fawns,
twins of a gazelle.
Your neck is like an ivory tower.
Your eyes are the pools of Heshbon
by the gate of Bath Rabbim.
Your nose is like the tower of Lebanon
looking toward Damascus.
Your head crowns you like Mount Carmel.
Your hair is like royal tapestry;
the king is held captive by its tresses.
How beautiful you are and how pleasing,
O love, with your delights!
Your stature is like that of the palm,
and your breasts like clusters of fruit.
I said, ‘I will climb the palm tree;
I will take hold of its fruit.’
May your breasts be like the clusters of the vine,
the fragrance of your breath like apples,
and your mouth like the best wine.”
Take each of these underlined words and ask yourself what kind of description your husband would give about you.
Of course, a woman’s appearance includes far more than just her figure. Men have unique preferences and wives should make every effort to know them. Since becoming Sonny’s wife, I have tried to keep my hair long. He prefers it this way and, even though it creates more work for me in the morning, when I see the satisfaction in his eyes as he holds me with his gaze, it makes the extra effort worthwhile. List five preferences that your husband has about your appearance. How often do you honor them?
