Reading Assignment
Lesson 13
“Know when I need you”
At least once each month, women struggle with irritability. Their body cries out for attention. A loving husband will provide his wife with the things she needs during this difficult time – privacy, sympathy, chocolate, etc. But women need to understand that men experience a similar emotional frustration when their body cries out for attention. Wives must be alert for this. They too must give their mate the things that he needs – forget the chocolate, he wants intimacy!
As was mentioned in the introduction to this section, experts estimate that the average male has a sexual thought every 40 to 50 seconds. In the hours following intimacy, these sexual thoughts are easy to deal with. But as time passes and the sexual bombardment builds, the frustration also builds. Men can often act very much unlike themselves when this happens. Their comments become more suggestive, their hands become more adventuresome, and their attention becomes more focused on whatever or whoever will give them release.
Wives must be alert for these signs. One of the greatest compliments you will ever receive from your husband is when he turns to you for fulfillment. One of the greatest insults you can ever give him is to refuse him or belittle him for this need. Be alert! Know when your husband needs you.
Thought Questions
Song of Solomon 8:10
“I am a wall, and my breasts are like towers.
Thus I have become in his eyes like one
bringing contentment.”
Define the word “contentment.” Ask your husband to explain how intimacy brings him contentment. If he is like most men, he will be thrilled to discuss this with you.
What do you think is the connection between the word “breasts” and the word “contentment”?
1 Corinthians 11:11-12
“In the Lord, however,
woman is not independent of man,
nor is man independent of woman.
For as woman came from man,
so also man is born of woman.
But everything comes from God.”
A key phrase in this passage is found in the very first words, “In the Lord.” The context is addressing a man and woman’s spiritual union. Notice how the Holy Spirit illustrates the spiritual interdependence of men and women by reminding them of their physical birth. The message of 1 Corinthians 11 shows that a couple’s spiritual well-being is drawn from the health of their physical relationship. When a man does not fulfill his role in the relationship or the woman fails to play her part, spiritual security is lost.
In what way does a woman’s attention to her husband’s definition of affection help or hurt him spiritually?
Genesis 2:24
“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother
and be united to his wife,
and they will become one flesh.”
What do the words “one flesh” mean in this passage? How does this phrase relate to the needs of your husband?
