Reading Assignment
Lesson 11
Q: What is the secret to clothing yourself modestly?
A: In the past few months, I have read the opinions of several women of various ages on the idea of immodesty. It ranges from women should be modest in public places and, therefore, show respect to members of the opposite sex – all the way to – women have the right to wear whatever they want and men should not lust after them.
I’ve thought about this quite a bit and wanted to share these thoughts with you.
If you knew that the person with you is a struggling alcoholic, would you offer them alcohol or drink it in front of them? What if the person with you struggles with pornography? Would you wear immodest clothing, knowing you would be tempting them? Shouldn’t the same be true even if you don’t know that they struggle with it? Is it not our responsibility as Christian women to encourage people to overcome their sins and not be a stumbling block to them? (1 Thessalonians 5:11, Galatians 6:1-2, Romans 14:13, Mark 9:42)
“…if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” ~ Galatians 6:1-2
The second opinion given above – women have the right to wear whatever they want and men should not lust after them – seems to lean in the direction of the world. Does it really matter what the world thinks or if we conform to their thinking? (“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” ~ Romans 12:2) Are we not called to be modest in all areas of our lives (1 Timothy 2:9, 1 Peter 3:3-4) and, therefore, to be considerate of the struggles that members of our Christian family face daily?
“We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves.” ~ Romans 15:1
It is our duty to keep the distractions minimal so that the Word of God is not maligned (Titus 2:5) and Jesus can clearly be seen in our lives!
Thought Question: Why is it important to be considerate of others with our modesty?
