Reading Assignment
Lesson 2

Q: Why is it important for a woman to make sure her family appreciates the creation story?

A: Because the worldly will try to convince them that the world was created through evolution or anything else less than God.

How many times have you read something in the Bible and were totally confused by it? It has happened to me many times, until someone explained how it connected to something else in the Bible. Then it became much clearer. This is one of the reasons why we should learn the biblical timeline in order. Let me give you the illustration that Gabriel used in his podcast – RestorationCast. The book of Zechariah talks about the temple being rebuilt and how some of the people rejoiced while others were saddened by it. If you are not reading along with the entire story, you may wonder what temple they are talking about or why the temple has to be rebuilt. If you only read up to the point of Solomon building the temple and see that things seem to be going well, but then read Zechariah and separate it from the context, the story makes no sense at all. However, if you’re reading Zechariah along with Ezra, and other books that happened around that same time, then you understand why they have rebuilt the temple after its destruction and that the older people recognize that this rebuilt temple is not as glorious as the one Solomon originally built. These older people are concerned that God has abandoned them.

I hope that illustration helps you see why the Bible is often confusing. Whenever it is read out of context or out of order, we don’t understand the whole story. When it is read in order, then we are better able to see what God was trying to reveal to us.

Thesis of the Bible:

In Genesis 3:15, we are given the first prophecy about a child who would be born who would crush the head of the serpent (the evil one). Because of this prophecy, we are looking through the rest of the Bible for the one who will be this serpent crusher. But who exactly is this person?

Side Note: One thing that I have found intriguing is that the Jews, throughout history, have been studying prophecies and looking forward to celebrating this serpent crusher (the Messiah) while, at the same time, Satan was looking for this person and trying to destroy him before he got destroyed himself. Every time Satan thought he had found the serpent crusher and had done something to turn him from God, he discovered that it was the wrong guy. God kept Him well hidden from the evil one.

Let’s take a quick look at the following Scriptures from the 5 Divisions of the Old Testament that explain Genesis 3:15 and the snake crusher in further detail:

  1. Law – Deuteronomy 18:15-22 – In this passage, we find out that the snake crusher is going to be a prophet like Moses and learn that a true prophet will speak what God tells him and it will happen.

  2. History – 2 Samuel 7:12-16 – This Scripture tells us that the snake crusher will be a descendant of King David and will be a king who will reign on the throne of David forever.

  3. Poetry – Job 19:25-26 and Psalm 22 – Both of these passages prophesy the death of the snake crusher.

  4. Major Prophets – Isaiah 53:7-12 – This passage develops who the snake crusher will be saying He will bear the sins of many. That’s what a priest did, brought the sins of the people before God and made a sacrifice for their sins. The snake crusher will be a priest – someone who intercedes for the people, goes before God and bears the sins of the people.

  5. Minor Prophets – Zechariah 6 – This chapter talks about a man named Joshua who is crowned king as well as being a priest. He is a type, in this situation, meaning a character which foreshadows the type of person that this snake crusher is going to be.

The most important thing for us to see is that all of the Bible was written about Jesus – from Genesis to Revelation. It is written with the thesis statement given in Genesis 3:15. Jesus is the serpent crusher, snake crusher, snake killer that all of creation has been waiting on and looking for from almost the beginning of time. Everything in the Bible is written about Him and, therefore, connected to Him.

Back to the Opening Question: Why is it important for a woman to make sure her family appreciates the creation story?

As we all know, the first event on the biblical timeline is creation. We also know that God took this ball of chaos (Genesis 1:1-2 – formless, void, darkness, covered in water) and rearranged it, added to it, made it into something useful. He organized it.

As we discussed last time, God put the Bible together in a certain order. Now we see that He also created and arranged the world in order. According to 1 Corinthians 14:33, our God is not a God of confusion, but of peace (completeness, wholeness, soundness, unity). He created things in a certain order so they would survive, provide sustenance, and to illustrate His nature.

Another important thing we learn from Genesis 1 is that God created us (humankind) in His image.

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” – Genesis 1:26 (ESV)

There are at least three things we can conclude from this one verse:

  1. God represents three different personalities (or functions or aspects) – God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. This is made evident when the phrases, “Let US,” “in OUR image,” and “after OUR likeness” are used. The entire Godhead was involved in the creation events. There are other verses that confirm this: 1 Corinthians 8:6, Genesis 1:2, Job 33:4, John 1:3, and Colossians 1:15-20.

  2. Being created in God’s image indicates that we are a reflection of His nature. Gabriel mentions in his podcast on creation that, when religious sects build a temple to their god, they will put an image of their god on the temple to make it known for whom it was built. When God created the world, which is His temple, He put His image on His temple. That image is us, because we were created in His image. That is one reason why we are on the earth. Also, being created in His image means we have a lesser version of God’s creative nature. God was able to create something out of nothing. We, on the other hand, must have something in order to make it into something else. We are creative (can sing, play and/or write music, draw, cook, sew, build, write stories or poems, paint, do math, solve problems, etc.), but at a lesser degree than God. He is the Master Creator.

  3. God gave humanity a job to do. God gave us dominion over all the earth and everything on it. Exodus 19:5-6 tells the Israelites that, if they keep His covenant, they will be His treasured possession, a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation.

God was, essentially, saying to Israel that being priests is your job and the basic job of priests is to worship Me and bring that worship to the world. (They, however, did not keep the covenant.) Today, Christians have been called to do the same job.

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. – 1 Peter 2:9

We are a royal priesthood. It is, therefore, our job as priests to bring the worship of God to the world.

So, how do we tie the thesis of the whole Bible to the creation story?

Thesis: “I will put enmity between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel.” – Genesis 3:15

Jesus was not only there at creation. He is the snake crusher!

What does all of this mean for you as a homemaker? You were created in the image of God and were given special passions, abilities from God to assist the snake crusher in defending your family. You were given the job of bringing the worship of God to the world, specifically to your family (husband, children, grandchildren).

As I said earlier, the worldly will try to convince your family that the world was created through evolution or anything else less than God. The world will try to separate you and your family from God. They will try to make the creation story seem like nonsense and, therefore, cause you to believe that the Genesis 3:15 thesis is not true.

It is your calling to have enough faith to believe that God exists (and created the world, that Jesus is the snake crusher, and that the Bible is true) and that He will reward those who seek Him (Hebrews 11:6). It is your responsibility to teach your children the beauty of God’s nature (His orderliness of creation and His Word) and how He intentionally created all of you in His image. (They will need to know this in order to understand that they are beautiful in God’s eyes and valuable to Him.) It is your job to be confident in your faith, to show God’s glory by using your abilities for Him, and to worship God by being the best wife, mother, and woman that you can be!
