Lesson 8
Q: Why is it important for a woman to make sure her family appreciates the periods of prophetic silence?
A: Since it’s easy to forget God during His times of silence, they need to be faithful to talk about Him, celebrate Him, and remember that He is coming back.
Although there are several times of silence presented in the Bible (such as the story of Samuel in 1 Samuel 3 and Jesus while He was in the tomb in Matthew 27; Mark 15; Luke 23; John 19), there are actually three periods of biblical history in which prophetic silence becomes obvious.
1 – The period between Joseph and Moses
Exodus 1:8 (ESV) Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.
In an earlier lesson, we discussed what happened because Pharaoh did not know Joseph and, therefore, did not know the God of Joseph. We also talked about God’s people and how they evidentally didn’t know Him. Moses had to ask for a name of God in order to explain Who sent him. (Exodus 3:12-15)
It’s scary to think that it only takes one generation to forget the importance of God and His blessings. As a homemaker, it’s important to realize how much time and effort it takes to create a generation who not only acknowledges God, but is also loyal to Him. It is equally as important to start making this happen today!
2 – The period between the return from exile and the coming of the Christ
Malachi 4:5-6 (ESV) “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”
Note: Elijah was a type of the snake-crushing Messiah.
Just as the period of Israelite slavery lasted approximately 400 years, this period of silence lasted 400 years. Can you imagine the turmoil that many of the believers in God experienced during this time? It would be so easy to let the teachings of God and the coming Messiah just slip through your fingers until there was no one left who knew God. However, God not only prepared for this time period with all of His miracles and prophecies in the Old Testament books, but He was preparing for the coming of Christ. Because of this preparation, there were still believers found on the earth. If you read the history of the world during this 400 years of God’s silence, you will see how God was working to bring Christ into the world at the right time.
If you are a family who observes Christmas or any holiday that represents the birth of Christ, it should be marked by far more than just giving gifts, it should be a grand celebration of the end of God’s silence. Even if you don’t observe a special day to mark Christ’s birth, as a homemaker, you should set aside a day each year to celebrate how God ended His silence by bringing the snake crusher into the world!
3 – The period of silence in which we now live
1 Corinthians 13:12 (ESV) For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.
Some would probably say that God is not silent at this time, He just speaks through His Word and does not need to speak directly to His people. Could it not be like it was during the 400 years of silence? God was still working during that time, He just wasn’t speaking. They had the Old Testament scrolls, we have the whole Bible. They had people who were still watching and waiting for the Messiah to come, we are still watching and waiting for the Messiah, our Lord and King, to come back.
It is interesting to note that each major period of silence is marked by a deliverer and enlightenment. In each period, God was and is working to prepare the way for His deliverer to rescue His people.
As a homemaker, there is no greater lesson that you must pass on to your family than preparing and expecting the end of God’s silence. Be diligent in remembering God and what He has done, both in the Bible times and with your own family. Be His voice and share His glory every day! (Deuteronomy 6:4-9)
