Reading Assignment

Introduction

Many preachers (including my husband) have spent years telling parents and congregations that we are quickly losing our children to the world. Each decade, it seems that the number of those leaving the Church increases. On top of that, only a small number find their way back to the Lord’s Church. In recent years, my husband and I have had heartbreaking conversations with young people who have turned their backs on CHRISTianity and turned to Catholicism or ?????? or even Atheism.

I have read articles about Bible teachers questioning their approach to relating the Bible to their young students because of this dilemma and parents who are searching for ways to help their children remain believers in God and His Word. I have discussed this tragedy with my husband and sons in order to gather information and helpful resources.

I say all of this as an introduction to this 16-week set of lessons. My plan is to not only use what I have recently learned, but to use chapters and excerpts from “To Keep the Faith,” a book written by my husband. I pray that you find this information helpful and challenging and that it increases your faith as you take a look at the lives of your own children, grandchildren, or other children who you influence on a daily basis. May the Lord God give you the wisdom to relate to your loved ones “the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!” (Romans 11:33, ESV) May they forever hold tightly to His everlasting love, mercies, and Truth!

Lesson 1

The Faith

As I was contemplating what to study together for our Homemaker Hero series, a running theme kept coming back to me. It mainly had to do with children, but it also concerned being faithful to God. As I continued to pray about faith and faithfulness, this passage of Scripture was brought to my mind:

And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man,yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’” And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

~ Luke 18:1-8 (ESV)

The first verse tells us the meaning of this parable; always pray and do not lose heart. Jesus tells us that if an unrighteous judge will give justice to one who comes back day after day with the same request, then our God, Who truly loves and wants what is best for us, will not only listen to those who are faithful to Him and who prayerfully ask for justice, but will, in due time, bring that justice swiftly.

Jesus was not talking about requests for insignificant things or healing or daily needs, but justice. What is it that causes Christians to give up their faith or children to lose their belief in God? Do they leave because they didn’t get the job they wanted or a house or a baby? Is it because they lost a loved one or had to go without some of their basic needs for awhile? If you honestly look at it, those things may have contributed or could have been the final straw, but the reality is that they were not taught the whole Truth. The injustice of the world got to them. They gave in to the constant pressure to just give up, the daily lies they were told about God and His ways, and the harsh realities of this life that none of us completely understand. They did not accept the Truth that justice is not always given in the here and now, but that God is listening and will bring justice quickly when He does bring it. That justice may not come before Jesus comes back for us, but it will most certainly come.

However, the truly haunting question is this: “Will Jesus find faith on earth when He comes back?” Think about that for a moment. Will we keep the faith until His return? Will we be part of the remnant that has our faith turned into reality when we see Him face to face or will we grow weary, give up, and disappoint the One Who loves us more than life itself?

That, dear Homemaker Hero, is what we must instill in our families and in others. That is the reason for the lessons we will be studying together – helping us and our families To Keep the Faith!
