Reading Assignment
Lesson 16

Q: Why is it important for a woman to make sure her family appreciates the Book of Revelation?

A: Because they need to know about and understand the many dangers and rewards that John revealed.

At the beginning of this 16-week study of the biblical timeline, it was pointed out that the Bible has been put together in a certain order to help us better understand it. The Old Testament works together to give us history from creation to the silent years preceding the coming of Jesus, and all of the New Testament works together to give us history from the birth of Christ to the prophetic revelation that describes His return. You were given an example from the Old Testament to demonstrate that whenever it is read out of context or out of order, we don’t understand the whole story. When it is read in order, then we are better able to see what God was trying to reveal to us. We looked at how God does all things in an orderly way (creation and the Bible), and how He prophesied the coming of the Snake Crusher.

Now that we are at the end of this study, I want to bring you back around by tying everything in the Old and New Testaments together. Sometimes, focusing on one story in the Bible causes us to lose the complete connection of the Bible. It’s not just a bunch of random stories put together for historical facts or for our enjoyment. From the beginning, it has been about the original theme of Genesis 3:15 and the Snake Crusher. From the time of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection (when the Snake Crusher dealt a deadly blow to the snake), His story and the Biblical timeline have continued.

Why Revelation?

As we take a look at the last event on the Biblical timeline, we will see the conclusion of several things – the Bible, life on this present earth, the last prophecy, the battle between the Snake Crusher and the snake, and the struggle for Christians between good and evil. Revelation is the final book and the final event on our timeline. It can be a very confusing book, but Revelation 1:3 says, “Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near.” Did you get that? Anyone who reads it aloud, hears it, and keeps what is written, will be blessed! Even though it is intimidating and often confusing, we should still study Revelation, because it applies to our lives today. It was not just written about things that will happen in the future. It was also written for all Christians, from the Apostle John’s day to today and until the end of time on this earth.

Warning!

One reason John was called to write Revelation was to warn all Christians about becoming too much like the world or having a compromising faith. Jesus taught His disciples, in the Sermon on the Mount, some of the dangers of losing our distinctiveness.

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:13-16, ESV)

As Christians, we can lose our saltiness, our light—our positive influence which gives glory to God, the Father.  We can also find examples of becoming like the world and remaining faithful to Christ in Revelation 2:8-3:22, as John writes letters to the seven churches of Asia.  Then, later in Revelation, we see that some will have the mark of the Beast, but Christians who have remained faithful will have God’s name written on their foreheads. They will not lose their distinctiveness.

This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666. Then I looked, and behold, on Mount Zion stood the Lamb, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. (Revelation 13:18-14:1, ESV)

Prepare For Christ’s Return!

A recurring theme throughout the New Testament concerns the return of Christ and being prepared for that day. In the Gospels, Jesus teaches us to stay awake, to be ready for His return. (Matthew 24:42-44; Luke 12:35-40) I love the sentence Jesus used in Luke 12:35-36, “Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning, and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks.” (ESV) Notice the illustration of staying dressed so you can be like servants who jump up and open the door as soon as the master knocks. Are you dressed and ready to go as soon as Jesus calls? As a Christian homemaker, you need to teach your family to always be dressed and ready!

Being prepared, which we talked about in the last lesson (Matthew 24-25), is the opposite of being like the world or blending in or compromising our faith. When we continue to prepare ourselves, we keep our distinctiveness. When we keep our distinctiveness, we become more like Christ, and as we become more like Him, we give glory to God, the Father.

God’s Desire

One more awesome thing that is revealed in Revelation is that God desires to dwell with us again. What a beautiful thought! If you recall, in the beginning God walked with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. (Genesis 3:8) That has been His desire from the creation of the world, but Adam and Eve sinned. He chose Israel to be His people, but they were unclean and God’s holiness kept Him from staying with them. Then Jesus came and made a way for every person to become clean and, someday, God will dwell with His people again.

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.” (Revelation 21:3, ESV)

Final Victory!

From the beginning of the Bible and the beginning of the world to the end of the Bible and the world as we know it, God has been there. He has woven a story that connects the Old and New Testaments together and connects our lives to Him. He prophesied the Snake Crusher (Genesis 3:15), sent the Snake Crusher into the world (Matthew 1; Luke 1-2), and will send the Snake Crusher to deal the final blow to the snake. (Revelation 20:7-10) Finally, the oppressor will be put away and Jesus, our King, will be victorious! What a glorious day that will be!

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11, ESV)

As a Christian homemaker, it should be your goal to paint the beautiful picture of God’s great love, the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives, Jesus’ extraordinary victory, and our final homecoming in such a way that your family will have a deep desire to be a part of that painting!

I pray that you have not only learned facts during this study, but have developed a deeper relationship with our God.
