Reading Assignment
Lesson 1

Introduction

You are reading the introduction from a very important book—Marital Blissters. The next 15 lessons for this 16-week semester contain study guides that can prepare you for marriage or dramatically improve the condition of the marriage you already have. The material is important because it reflects God’s divine design for the most important human relationship you will ever experience.

When a man and woman are joined in marriage, they come together to form a mirror image of the divine realm of God. Like a full-color glossy photograph opposite a descriptive text, marriage illustrates many of the Bible’s most important principles. In Ephesians 5:22-33, God used marriage to illustrate Christ’s great love for the church. In Revelation 21:9, He used the imagery of a bride and groom to illustrate Christ’s eternal relationship with the faithful.

Perhaps, God’s most tender use of the marital relationship came when Jesus comforted His disciples with these words, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” (John 14:1-3)

Many homes in the Judean countryside were built on the side of a hill. Stilts were used to keep the residence level. The space below the living area was often left open for storage and to shelter the animals. When the eldest son became engaged to be married, he would excuse himself from his bride by telling her that he had to go and prepare a place for her, but soon he would return to celebrate their marriage. During the following months, he would spend much time building a small apartment below his father’s house by enclosing the open space. After completing the dwelling, the son would travel back to his bride and, with much pomp and festivity, carry her to the house which he had prepared with his very own hands.

The Jewish custom mentioned above is undoubtedly the cultural background of Christ’s words in John 14. Every Jewish couple could relate to His description and every couple today should appreciate His tender illustration. Notice how Jesus used the engagement period and the preparation of a home as a way to explain the coming glories of Heaven. Some of the greatest good news we could ever hope to receive in this life is that Christ is building our heavenly homes and He will return to take us there. Jesus has gone into glory to build a heavenly apartment for you and me.

When a marriage is full of peace and love, the John 14 illustration takes on a special warmth. When a marriage is filled with strife and hate, God’s full-color illustration becomes smeared and unattractive. Your marital relationship will help to define Heaven for the world. Should you choose to implement the material within this book, the world will see more clearly the joys that God has to offer. Should you reject the biblical teachings within this material, the world will have one more out-of-focus distraction to draw them away from God.

Outside of the life of Jesus, the marital relationship is probably the most powerful illustration God has ever used to explain His realm to us. You have the great opportunity to promote His tender illustration. Your marriage can become a mirror of the very image of God. It is our sincere prayer that these study guides will help you along that journey.
