Lesson 16
Spiritual Growth
Key #2 Defeat the Works of the Flesh
We can defeat Satan…
…if all the lazy folks will wake up!
…if all the lukewarm folks will fire up!
…if all the dishonest folks will confess up!
…if all the ornery folks will sweeten up!
…if all stressed folks will lighten up!
…if all the discouraged folks will cheer up!
…if all the estranged folks will make up!
…if all the depressed folks will look up!
…if all gossiping folks will shut up!
…if all the true soldiers of Christ will stand up!
Then we can defeat the Devil.
The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;
idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition,
dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.
Galatians 5:19-21
This lesson is designed to measure your growth away from the influences of Satan. The acts of the sinful nature are described in Galatians 5:19-21. As each description is discussed below, document your condition accordingly.
Directions: If 0% represents Satan’s total defeat of this area of your life and 100% represents Christ’s total victory in this area of your life, what percentage would represent your present condition?
1. “The acts of the sinful nature are… sexual immorality” – In Greek, the word for sexual immorality is porneia. It means unlawful sexual engagements. Have you openly discussed any sexual involvement you may have had in the past? Now is not the time to hide the truth from your “one flesh” partner.
2. “The acts of the sinful nature are… impurity” – In Greek, the word for impurity is akatharsia. It literally means dirt or defiling with unnatural vices.
3. “The acts of the sinful nature are… debauchery” – In Greek, the word for debauchery is aselgeia. It means lewd, indecent, excessive sexual conduct.
4. “The acts of the sinful nature are… idolatry” – In Greek, the word for idolatry is eidololatria. It means recognition and worship of false gods. Remember, a vehicle, house, or even a salary can become an idol.
5. “The acts of the sinful nature are… witchcraft” – In Greek, the word for witchcraft is pharmakeia. It means drugging, magic arts, and superstitious dealings. Do you rely on drugs, alcohol or superstitions?
6. “The acts of the sinful nature are… hatred” – In Greek, the word for hatred is echthrai. It means enmity toward God or man. Are you hateful?
7. “The acts of the sinful nature are… discord” – In Greek, the word for discord is eris. It means strife, contention, and quarreling. Do you fight often?
8. “The acts of the sinful nature are… jealousy” – In Greek, the word for jealousy is zelos. It means zealous envy. Is jealousy part of your relationship?
9. “The acts of the sinful nature are… fits of rage” – In Greek, the word for fits of rage is thumoi. It means passionate wrath and anger. Have you a temper?
10. “The acts of the sinful nature are… selfish ambition” – In Greek, the word for selfish ambition is eritheiai. It means self-seeking pursuits.
11. “The acts of the sinful nature are… dissension” – In Greek, the word for dissension is dichostasiai. It means splitting in two, divisiveness. If your dating experience was a cycle of breaking up and making up, you have set a nasty trend that could carry over into your marriage.
12. “The acts of the sinful nature are… factions” – In Greek, the word for factions is haireseis. It means party-spirited, cliquish. Do you ever play your family or friends against your partners?
13. “The acts of the sinful nature are… envy” – In Greek, the word for envy is phthonoi. It means a mixture of ill will, malice, and jealousy.
14. “The acts of the sinful nature are… drunkenness” – In Greek, the word for drunkenness is methai. It means controlled by strong drink. If this is part of your relationship, you are doomed to much misery.
15. “The acts of the sinful nature are… orgies” – In Greek, the word for orgies is komoi. It means excessive reveling that is often connected with drinking parties.
