Lesson 9

Instilling Biblical Knowledge

So far in this series of lessons on helping our children become and remain faithful to the Lord, we have looked at “Conversion: Sin, Sacrifice, and Self-discipline”, “Mentally Checked Out or Still Engaged?” and “Investment: Taking Ownership of Their Place Within the Church.” In this lesson, I would like to take a moment to look at another resource that my family and I used in homeschooling and while teaching children’s Bible classes at a congregation where we attended.

This resource is called Bible Study Guide for All Ages

This curriculum was designed to cover the whole Bible in four years and teach all ages the same topics during the same time period. Each lesson has age appropriate learning activities for different stages of life. Thorough knowledge of the Bible is the goal throughout the curriculum. Personal application of Biblical lessons is also stressed, and activities for practical application occur at the end of each lesson to make sure that children both learn and apply the lessons.

The reasons my husband and I chose this curriculum for our family was because of the emphasis it places, each year, on the life of Jesus, because of the Bible timeline it uses, because it uses repetition, memorization and application to help it stay with you, and because it covers the whole Bible.

Let me step back a little and explain some of the reasons of why we selected it a little more. First of all, the life of Jesus. During each of the four years, there are lessons about Jesus from His birth to His ascension. This is important since He is God’s Son and we must believe that God not only sent Him to be born and live among us, but also to die and be raised to life again. He came to save each of us. Having a constant reminder of Jesus helps us draw closer to Him and remember His sacrifice of His own life for ours.

Next, I mentioned the Bible timeline. It is essential to helping our children (and adults) see how the Bible unfolds. The timeline begins at Creation (or even a little before) and continues through Revelation (since it tells of the end of time). As you begin using the timeline, you spread it on the wall or table or wherever you can make it fit to show the big picture (Creation to Revelation with the Cross of Christ in the center). Then, with each lesson, you show how that story fits on the timeline. It helps you see God and His handiwork as He worked throughout history. If you homeschool, you can even expand this timeline to include things that were happening in all parts of the world throughout as they occurred. It is amazing to see how things fit together in this world that God created! To me, it brings things alive so they aren’t make believe or just ink on a page any longer.

The third reason mentioned was repetition, memorization and application. That sounds so blah or monotonous, but this curriculum uses songs, activities, and some games to make it enjoyable for the kids and it takes a few questions from previous lessons to help keep it fresh in your memory. That’s what makes repetition a good thing. Using the same questions week after week gets old, but intertwining different questions into different lessons here and there makes it better. It’s exciting to see what you can remember later on and it helps it stick with you—also where memorization and application work best! (More on application in the next paragraph.)

The last reason given was because it covers the whole Bible. Most curriculum just tells the same Bible stories like the story of Creation, Noah’s Ark, David and Goliath then on to Baby Jesus, Jesus as a boy, and a few other heroes of the Bible. While all of these are wonderful stories, there is very little emphasis on applying it to our own lives or making them believable. Not to be blasphemous, but they begin to sound more like fairy tales instead of true stories. Even when we do make applications to our lives, many times these applications do not fit the true meaning of the story. Often, we tend to spend more time doing the crafts that come with the lessons or the color pages or the word puzzles instead of helping the children understand the meaning of the story and why it is important for their spiritual growth. Even the smallest children can learn words and/or songs from the Bible. That’s one reason it is important to start teaching them from the beginning that the Bible is God’s Word and that God is the most incredible spiritual Being that they will ever come to know. It is better for them to learn that lesson now—not wait until Judgement Day when all knees will bow before our Creator. (Romans 14:10-12)

So, how does this apply to you, as a Homemaker Hero, especially if you cannot purchase it for your family? Remember, the idea is not to just learn facts about the Bible, but to instill Biblical knowledge and teach your children how to apply it to their own lives. It’s not enough to just listen to Bible stories that have little to no connection to each other or no chronological order to them. There has to be an application, a reason for learning them, a realization that these are facts, true stories, and a part of our history. But more importantly, you must impress on their hearts (Deuteronomy 6:4-9) that God is the Author of the Bible and He gave us His Word because He loves us and wants each of us to come to know Him and love Him! With or without this curriculum, you can do this for your family. Even if you have to make up your own curriculum or lessons, you can definitely do this! God will be with you and bless you for it!
